What is Skin Pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation refers to the colour of your skin, which is largely determined by a natural pigment called melanin. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes, and your skin naturally produces more melanin when exposed to the sun as a protective response.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when too much melanin is produced, causing areas of skin to appear darker than the surrounding skin. In some cases, pigmentation can also appear lighter.

Sun exposure, ageing, hormonal changes and skin inflammation or injury can all contribute to freckles, age spots and uneven skin tone.

What is Laser Pigment Treatment?

Laser Pigment Treatment is a non-invasive, cosmetic procedure that uses focused light energy to target and break down excess melanin (the dark pigment in skin). It may help to clear sun spots, freckles, age spots, and uneven skin tone.

How Does It Work?

At MP Skin Aesthetics, we use laser treatments based on photothermolysis, where specific laser wavelengths selectively target pigmentation while minimising damage to the surrounding skin.

The laser breaks down the pigment, allowing the treated spots to gradually fade over 10-14 days. Ideal for addressing sun damage, pigmentation and unwanted spots.

LED, or light-emitting diode therapy uses varying wavelengths of light to help increase the healing process and regenerate the skin.

LED Light Therapy also has antibacterial properties.

What Happens During Your Laser Pigment Treatment?

Goals assessment – Your clinician will discuss with you, your medical and skin history and goals to ensure you have all the information about the procedure, and feel comfortable with the development of your individual treatment plan.

This process enables your clinician to tailor the treatment to your specific skin needs and answer any questions you may have.

Preparation before your treatment  – Your clinician will cleanse the targeted areas to prepare your skin before the laser procedure. Protective eye shields are placed over your eyes. A patch test is often done beforehand.

The laser procedure – The clinician passes the laser device over the targeted skin. You may feel a quick snapping sensation, like a warm rubber band hitting the skin.

Immediate reaction – The treated spots immediately look darker, frosted, or slightly red and swollen.

After your treatment – Your Clinician will cleanse the treatment areas and follow up with an application of moisturiser and sunscreen.

Procedure length – The preparation and procedure usually takes between 20-30 minutes.

Potential results – Results are visible usually around 10-14 days as the skin sheds and renews with lighter looking spots. Some areas may require repeat treatments.

At MP Skin Aesthetics, we only use medical grade, Therapeutic Good Association (TGA) approved laser technology.

Laser Pigmentation Procedure:
Step 1: Skin Consultation – We will discuss your concerns and explain the treatment process and aftercare. During the consultation your Clinician will recommend and discuss any products you may need to use prior to your procedure, to ensure your  skin is well prepped to reduce risks and to ensure optimal results from your treatment.

Step 2: Skin Preparation – Your skin is thoroughly cleansed. You will experience a warming flicking sensation as the laser passes over the treatment area. Most patients experience minimal discomfort, sometimes described as if a rubber band is being lightly flicked onto the skin.

Step 3: Aftercare – After your treatment a thin layer of cooling serum, and sunscreen is applied to the skin. There will likely be some redness and mild swelling, slight darkening of pigmentation in the skin following a treatment. Mineral make up can be applied to the skin when the heat has resolved.

Detailed aftercare will be advised at the time of the consultation as it will be tailored to your skin type.
