Do I need a referral?

No. You do not need a referral to see us for a skin check or skin cancer treatment.

Will I need to go to hospital for treatment?

The vast majority of skin cancers can be treated under local anaesthetic in our custom treatment room. Hospital treatment is rarely required, but we will discuss this with you if your case is more complex.

Can I opt to see a plastic surgeon for further treatment?

Absolutely. If you prefer, we can arrange referral to trusted plastic surgeons — either privately or through the public system at Frankston Hospital.

Will the procedure hurt?

Local anaesthetic injections may sting for a few seconds, but the procedure itself should not be painful. Mild discomfort afterwards is common, but usually well-controlled with paracetamol.

Will I get a scar?

All surgery leaves a scar, but the size and appearance vary depending on the procedure, the site, and your individual healing. We will guide you on scar care to achieve the best possible result.

Do I need to stop my blood thinners?

In most cases, no. Medications such as aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, or newer agents (Eliquis, Xarelto, Apixaban) should not be stopped unless we specifically advise you to.

How soon will I get my results?

Biopsy results are usually available within one week. We will contact you promptly to discuss results and next steps.

How often should I have a skin check?

This depends on your personal risk factors and history. For most people, an annual check is recommended. If you have a history of skin cancer or are at higher risk, more frequent checks may be advised.

Can I just have one or two spots checked? Do I have to have a full skin check?

Yes — you are welcome to request a spot check for one or two lesions only. Please mention this when booking your appointment. However, where possible, we recommend a complete skin check, as this gives the best chance of detecting skin cancers early.

Are your doctors dermatologists?

No, our doctors are experienced General Practitioners who have a strong interest in skin cancer.
They have completed additional training in skin cancer detection and treatment, and many of our doctors perform skin cancer checks and procedures as a significant part of their practice.
If needed, we will always refer you to a dermatologist or other specialist for further care.
