The body’s healing process

Scaring is a normal part of your skin’s healing process.

Unfortunately, some acne, surgical or trauma scars leave the skin looking blemished or unsightly.

Once the skin is injured, the body starts working to repair the wound by creating a scab and producing collagen to renew the skin.

If collagen is produced too quickly, it may not be able to replicate the exact patterns that are present across the rest of your skin, this is when scars appear.

Several different factors can affect the appearance of your scars including age, type of scar, skin tone, the location of the injury and hormones.

Fortunately, the appearance of scars can be reduced.

Scar Treatments Quick Facts

Types of scarring

There are five main types of scars we treat:

1. Normotrophic (normal fine-line scars) – A minor wound like a small cut or minor surgery scar will usually heal and leave a visible mark or raised line.

2. Atrophic (pitted or sunken scars) – Some scars caused by acne or chickenpox, can have a sunken or pitted appearance also known as “ice-pick” scars.

3. Keloid scars – A keloid scar is an overgrowth of tissue that happens when too much collagen is produced at the site of a wound and can be pink, red or darker than the surrounding skin. The scar is raised and keeps growing, even after the wound has healed.

4. Hypertrophic scars – Like keloid scars, hypertrophic scars are the result of excess collagen being produced at the site of a wound. Hypertrophic scars do not extend beyond the boundary of the original wound and may have a raised appearance.

5. Stretch Mark Scars – Stretch marks are long, narrow streaks, stripes or lines that develop on the skin. They are common and occur when the skin is suddenly stretched. Stretch marks can also affect the texture of the skin.

At MP Skin Aesthetics there are various ways we can treat scars including:

Excel V Laser – This laser treatment has a shorter wavelength so that less energy is used to clear problem area. Less energy needed means greater comfort levels, less swelling and less downtime.

Laser Genesis – Laser Genesis treatment is incredibly safe, with the controlled thermal injuries that it produces rejuvenating targeted skin, without harming the surrounding areas.

LED Light Therapy – Is pain-free, non-invasive, soothing and rejuvenating skin treatment. LED, or light-emitting diode therapy uses varying wavelengths of light. LED light therapy is used to help regenerate the skin and increase the healing process and antibacterial properties.

Skin Needling – A series of tiny surgical steel needles which pierce the skin creating micro-channels in the skin which trigger your immune system, stimulating your body’s natural healing response, increasing collagen production and accelerating cell regeneration.

Chemical Peels – A Chemical Peel is a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers of the skin to reveal the fresh, new skin layers.
